Stacking Functions
"Stacking functions" is term from permaculture, indicating a system in which every individual element performs as many different functions as possible. The different functions of the CityDorms system include:
-
End the housing crisis.
-
Improve public health and public safety.
-
Reduce crime, especially civility infractions and survival crime.
-
Promote civic responsibility, stewardship, and positive interpersonal interactions.
-
Encourage the development of natural social support networks.
-
Support local manufacturers and create family-wage jobs
-
Address climate change.
-
Improve public spaces.
-
Provide flexible, individualized training in both work and supervisory skills.
-
Promote personal responsibility.
-
Help people build rental history.
-
Facilitate improvements in mental health.
-
Facilitate addiction recovery.
-
Create a more positive business atmosphere.
-
Protect privacy.
-
Minimize identity-based barriers (aka "discrimination").
-
...and more!
Respect to existing efforts
Seattle and King County have united to address the housing crisis, yet still lack a clear vision for how to do so. Expanding traditional social work approaches isn't going to work, no matter how much funding and goodwill stand behind them. Those older approaches are too slow and rigid to respond to a rapidly changing situation. We need an agile, flexible system that self-adjusts to the needs of this month, rather than the needs of five years ago. However, we wish to honor and respect the time and effort put in by this dedicated group of people. We look forward to working with them in the implementation of the CityDorms system.
